Fresno Chaffee Zoo

Zoo 894 West Belmont Avenue, Fresno, California 93728 (559) 498-5910

The early history of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo is very brief and vague. The period between 1907 and 1947 lacked official records, had no professional personnel, and a rather haphazard development. The first animals, unwanted pets, were donated and housed in make shift cages. In the 1920’s the addition of the Amphitheater brought many people to the park and Zoo. Bears, local cats, hoof stock, and birds were added to the Zoo and housed in log cabin type exhibits. The American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA – now AZA) officially recognizes that the Roeding Park Zoo opened in 1929.
